Don’t lose sleep over choosing the right mattress
Your sleep is important, and we know trying to choose the right mattress can be tricky so we have put together five tips to help you choose the right mattress for your bed.
1. How to know when you need to replace your mattress
Mattresses aren’t made to last forever. As your mattress ages, the quality of your sleep will deteriorate. The average lifespan of a mattress is eight years, but if you start to have restless nights, wake up in pain, or can no longer comfortably sleep through the night, then it may be time to consider replacing your mattress.
2. How to know what type of mattress you need
Foam or coils? This is the most significant decision you will have to make when trying to choose the right mattress. Both options have their advantages; foam mattresses can adapt to the unique contours of your body, whereas coil mattresses have the bounce and traditional feel you expect from your mattress. But, when you are trying to choose the right mattress for your bed, you also need to consider how much support your body needs. This is directly related to your weight because weight affects how much support you will receive from your mattress. The more you weigh, the more a foam mattress needs to sink to accommodate your body. Therefore, if you weigh over 250 pounds, we recommend you buy a coil mattress for proper spinal support.
3. Find out your preferred firmness level before you start shopping
The ideal mattress firmness for most people is one that provides you with enough softness to eliminate pressure point pain, but still be firm enough to keep your spine in proper alignment while you sleep. A mattress like this usually falls in the 4-7 range on the mattress firmness scale (where 1 equals soft and 10 equals the most firm).
4. Sleeping position matters
If you sleep on your side, then choose a mattress that scores between 3-6 on this scale. Side sleepers need a mattress that can accommodate their movements in the night; a mattress that’s too firm can cause lower back and shoulder pain. Stomach sleepers should go with a bed that scores a 5,6 or 7 out of 10 because they need to remain as flat as possible to prevent pressure building on the spine.
5. Set a budget before you buy
In an ideal world, you’ll have $800-$1,000 to spend on your new mattress. Anything less than this will mean that the mattress you get may not be capable of properly supporting your body for years to come, and you may have to buy another mattress in a few years. So invest in quality, and sleep easy knowing you don’t need to spend the earth on a good night’s sleep.
